Styles of Middle Eastern Dance ... just a few of them!

   
 

Cabaret

This is the style that most westerners recognise as "bellydance". The costume is usually a bra and belt with skirt and a veil is commonly used as a prop.

American Tribal

Based on  synchronised group improvisation using specific cues, this style evolved in the USA in the 1960s. Both the costuming and dance steps have roots in Middle Eastern, Indian and Spanish cultures.

Baladi

Referred to as "urbanised folk" - this style evolved in Egypt early this century. The music has a specific format and European instruments such as the saxophone and accordion start to appear.

Saidi

An "earthy" style from Upper Egypt that often incorporates a cane (assaya) as a prop. More covered costumes, such as a baladi dress, are usually worn and  traditional instruments eg. mizmar are used.

Ghawazee

An Egyptian female gypsy style dance with ancient instruments such as arghul and rebeba.

Zaar

A Spiritual "trance" dance from Egypt with a specific  drum rhythm.
 

 

  

Nubian

The dance style of the Nubian people of Upper Egypt. It has a more African flavour.

Milaya Luff

A playful Alexandrian dance style using a black shawl (milaaya) as a prop.
 

 

  

Pharonic

A theatrical style inspired by the poses found in ancient Egyptian paintings.

Khaleegy

A dance style from the Gulf States typified by swishing head movements and the wearing of a full, highly decorated dress. The Khaleegy rhythm features in the music.
